Gewurz is not second rate

Gewurztraminer has its detractors out there, yet I remain a fan. This flight features two regions that embrace this variety, Mendocino County’s Anderson Valley and sunny Alsace in the eastern reaches of France.

Handley Anderson Valley Gewurztraminer 2006
This wine radiates roses and parfume, in a light-bodied format with a hint of RS, classic touch of bitterness and a little warmth when up to room temperature. P&B in Philo 14.2% $13.99 at Bottle Barn Handley

Domaine Zind Humbrecht Alsace Gewurztraminer 2005
The previous bottle of this wine that I opened a few months ago was textbook perfect – fragrant with rose and low acidity in the mouth – a big white wine.  Again in September this wine showed a similar profile with some sweet candy smells and a touch of RS.  There is also the classic touch of bitterness and some warmth. Produced and bottled at the domaine in Turckheim 14% $19.95 at Traverso’s.
