Island whites

Argiolas, Vermentino di Sardegna DOC, Costamolino 2007 The current vintage is just as vivaciously New World in appearance as the previous vintage.  There’s plenty of perfume and citrus fruits with ample acidity to top it off.

Notes from the ’06 vintages: Just one week ago I opened a bottle of this same vintage and noted the smells of sweet fruit and floral notes. The palate is fresh with Viognier-like flavors and a light body. Today again we see this ripeness of fruit in a peachy vein. In May ‘08 the richness is even more apparent, a fatness that complements the fruit.

90% Vermentino, 10% other grapes, all grown in the Costamolino vyd. The site 625 ft elevation, clay soil, SW exposure, yield 3 tons per acre, SS ferm, no oak, partial ml, 2.56 g/l RS 13.5% $12.99 at Bottle Barn

Kyos, Sicilia, Grillo IGT 2006

There’s a sense of green herbs, nuts and stone fruits. This acidity is notable in this wine as well though as electric as in the Argiolas. This wine also pales in freshness in this comparison though if tasted alone it would be just fine. Sourced from grapes grown in the northwestern portion of the island. Bottled by Cantina di Soave in Soave 12% $11.99 at Bottle Barn
