Coulee de Serrant 2004

Clos de la Coulee de Serrant, Savennieres-Coulee de Serrant 2004 The wine in this bottle is deeply golden, almost brown, the nose is very complex, the mouth is quite dense and the flavors go on for a long time. Yet this wine is quite evolved.

The wines of Savennieres and in particular this estate are known for being quite hard in youth and very long lived. If this wine were in its third decade the overall sensory impression could make sense but the issue with this bottle appears to be oxidation, a failure of the cork to provide a proper seal, bringing it to OAP status prematurely.  We’ll purchase another bottle, give it another go and report on the result.

The estate has been practicing biodynamic farming well before many gave the method a thought. The grapes are all Chenin Blanc from vines averaging 30 years of age, grown on 7 hectares above the Loire. Proprietaire and viticulteur Nicolas Joly.
