The structure of California

Bogle Vineyards, California, Petite Sirah 2006
With notes back to 2001 this wine has been a favorite for showing some tannin in an affordable package. The prices has been steady as well. In October ’08 this ’06 sported sweet smells of vanilla and cinnamon while the mouth showed berry fruit, accented by the oak on a tannic frame. In April ’09, the fruit is evolving, drying a bit and melding with a meaty complexity. The mouth is spot-on and still demonstrating value. The fruit is sourced from Clarksburg and Lodi. V&B in Graton. 13.5% $8.99 at Bottle Barn Bogle

Adobe Road, Sonoma County, Zinfandel 2005 This was the big winner, Sweepstakes Red, at the recent Sonoma County Harvest Fair. There’s certainly a sense of the alcohol, dusty trails and some pruny fruit in the nose. The mouth is a like a thick slice of blackberry crumble, all rich ripe fruit and sweet-appearing notes. The tannins are quite ripe accentuating this rich style of Zinfandel. Proprietors Kevin and Debra Buckler. Cellared & Botted in Sebastopol 15.2% $27.99 at Bottle Barn Adobe Road
