California Port

Meyer Family California Port nv
This wine was described by one of the students as tasting like a ‘rum raisin chocolate bar’.  I can’t improve on that.  This wine has complexity, some palpable alcohol as in these wines from the Douro and the silky texture of a fine tawny, with a more youthful appearance.

I recently shared a passionate discussion of the world’s great dessert wines when I met Matt Meyer at Wine Song in Mendocino. He has visited great producers of dessert wine around the world and applies his knowledge from these far away benchmarks to make a special port, which is mostly Zin treated to a modified Solera System.

Matt said that they started the process in 1987 with the Portuguese grape Touriga Nacional. Each year they blend in the newest wines, mostly from old vine Zin in Lodi, thereby capturing the complexity of older aged tawny with the freshness of vintage port.
