{"id":33,"date":"2007-09-21T12:21:25","date_gmt":"2007-09-21T20:21:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/rjwine.com\/blog\/2007\/09\/21\/california-port\/"},"modified":"2007-09-21T20:24:08","modified_gmt":"2007-09-22T04:24:08","slug":"california-port","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rjwine.com\/blog\/2007\/09\/21\/california-port\/","title":{"rendered":"California Port"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><strong>Meyer Family California Port nv<\/strong><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial\">This wine was described by one of the students as tasting like a &#8216;rum raisin chocolate bar&#8217;.\u00a0 I can&#8217;t improve on that.\u00a0 This wine has complexity, some palpable alcohol as in these wines from the Douro and the silky texture of a fine tawny, with a more youthful appearance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial\">I recently shared a passionate discussion of the world&#8217;s great dessert wines when I met Matt Meyer at Wine Song in Mendocino. <span><\/span>He has visited great producers of dessert wine around the world and applies his knowledge from these far away benchmarks to make a special port, which is mostly Zin treated to a modified Solera System.  <span><\/span><o:p><br \/>\n<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial\">Matt said that they started the process in 1987 with the Portuguese grape Touriga Nacional.<span>  <\/span>Each year they blend in the newest wines, mostly from old vine Zin in Lodi, thereby capturing the complexity of older aged tawny with the freshness of vintage port.<o:p> <\/o:p><\/span>C&amp;B in Oakville 18% $29.95 for a 500ml at Traverso&#8217;s  <span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial\"><o:p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.meyerfamilycellars.com\" title=\"Meyer Family\" target=\"_blank\">Meyer Family<\/a><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><strong>Christopher Creek Russian River Petite Sirah Port 2004<\/strong><br \/>\nInky appearance, quite noticeable alcohol and loads of tannin. 18% alcohol. This is a bottle from my cellar.
